6 ways to bring personality, adventure, and intention to your couples photoshoot experience.

Two lovers embracing at what feels like the top of the world

We’re here to learn how to bring more personality, meaning, and intention to your couples photoshoot experience. Gone are the days of stiff studio photos with marbled backgrounds and matching outfits. We all want stunning photos in scenic locations while looking like natural, effortless models. I know what you’re thinking “that sounds amazing but I wouldn’t even know where to start.” I got you. Here are six tips for creating more than just beautiful photos with your time. If you’re in love and want to capture this chapter of your life in a creative and genuine way, then you’ve come to the right place.

1. Do an in-home session

What better way to feel like the most authentic version of yourself than to be in the place you love most. I LOVE in couples photoshoot home sessions. There’s a layer of comfort an intimacy there that just naturally that translates in photos. It’s cozy and natural and real. The photos will feel so personal to you because they will be directly reflective of how you actually spend most of your time together. Sharing coffee, cuddling on the couch, making dinner, sipping wine.

2. Rent an air bnb or hotel room

Maybe you don’t have an eye for interior design. Maybe you just don’t want to clean your place. Or maybe you need an excuse to have a little weekend getaway. Renting an Airbnb is a wonderful option. You get to pick the perfect aesthetic for your photos, you don’t have to worry about cleanup, you get a mini vacay and get to share a new experience together.

3. Pick someplace special to the two of you

Maybe you guys love to go on a certain hike, or there’s a spot downtown where you had your first kiss. Maybe there’s secret swimming hole you love to swim at, or even your favorite place to people watch. It doesn’t have to be conventional. This is your couples photoshoot and doing it someplace meaningful to you will only elevate your pictures and your experience. Dream big and be as creative as you want.

4. Do what you love

Do you play guitar, do you have pets, an old truck you rebuilt, do you paddle board, do you love drinking wine at sunset? Think about the things that make you you and how we can incorporate them into the photoshoot to develop more personality and significance. Let’s put you in your most natural element and tell the story of who you are by doing what you love.

5. Try something new

Stepping outside of your comfort zone by trying something new is a great way to add some honest vulnerability to your photos. I love this because it takes the focus off of getting your picture taken, and puts it on having a new experience with each other. This is your chance to tick something off your bucket list! Have you always wanted to go snowshoeing, skydiving, or learn to surf? It doesn’t have to be that extreme either, maybe you want to go on a new hike or volunteer to play with puppies at a shelter or paint a huge canvas together. Trying something new together is a great bonding experience and will add a new layer of meaning when you look back on your photos and remember your day together.

6. Don’t hold back

Look, I get it. You don’t want to look stupid, you don’t want to do something embarrassing, you don’t want to frolic carefree in a field while people are watching. It feels awkward AF. Trust me, I know. I traveled all over the world setting up my tripod in public and taking shameless selfies. People will stare. But here’s the thing, those people are literally never going to think of you ever again. You, on the other hand, might always wonder how fantastic your photos might have been if you’d just loosened up all the way. Don’t be afraid to look goofy. This is supposed to be fun. Giggle, tickle, chase each other- be in love. That is how we will get breathtaking photos, when you’re in the moment. When you’re simply having fun, not worrying about if you look silly or not.
